Universal Pictures is an American film studio, owned by Comcast through its wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal, and is one of Hollywood's "Big Six" film studios. The production studios are located at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive in Universal City, California, while the distribution and other corporate offices are situated in New York City. Universal Studios is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The studio was founded in 1912 by the German Carl Laemmle (pronounced "LEM-lee"), Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour.
Six of Universal Studios' films have achieved remarkable box office success, including Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Despicable Me 2 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), and Jurassic World (2015). The first three of these films, all directed by Steven Spielberg, became the highest-grossing films at the time of their initial release.
NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation, owns and operates a diverse portfolio of news and entertainment television networks, a leading motion picture company, significant television production operations, a premier television stations group, world-renowned theme parks, and a premium ad-supported streaming service.
