To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place, unless one has a full-on existential crisis or is a Ken. Making a Barbie movie was an amazing opportunity, one that the filmmakers believed they could do something truly special with by approaching it in an unexpected, surprising and clever way, said Margot Robbie. They knew that audiences probably have preconceived notions, whether good or bad, about Barbie, which presented a significant challenge, but one they were up for.

Ryan Gosling's Ken was created to simply observe the awesomeness that is Barbie, with a line in the film stating that he only exists within the warmth of Barbie's gaze. He has no identity of his own, so he's in a kind of existential hell. However, he's given a job, which is "beach," though he's not sure what that job specifically entails, but he really wants to be good at it.

According to America Ferrara, Gloria is the "every woman." At work, she's low on the totem pole, but she has long-held dreams of climbing the ladder and influencing the brand she works on. Ferrara didn't grow up playing with Barbies or think she had any relationship to Barbie, but she believes we all do, as Barbie is such a significant part of our culture.

Kate McKinnon shared that if she were to pick a role for herself, it would be the "Weird Barbie." McKinnon's sister had a bunch of Barbies whose hair she brushed and clothes she cared for, but there was one Barbie that got its head shaved, with its legs splayed as far as they would go – a Barbie that every little girl grew up with.

Simu Liu explained that Kens are just Kens, as they simply hang around, and a lot of their identity is derived from being able to win the gaze of the Barbies. They are really just kind of hypercompetitive about really dumb things. It's revealed that Liu's Ken is a skilled dancer, able to do backflips, which Ryan Gosling's Ken really resents.

Issa Rae felt incredibly flattered when Greta Gerwig said that she thought Rae would be perfect to play the President Barbie, as all Barbies can do anything and are capable of everything. Rae saw it as a treat to have the opportunity to play the President of all the Barbies.

Michael Cera's character, Allan, is a sort of marginalized person in this world of Kens – he's basically not a success or popular, just a loner, always on the periphery, desperate to fit in but really just not on the same wavelength as the Ken fraternity around him.

Will Ferrell, who plays the Mattel CEO, shared that Greta Gerwig encouraged the cast to improvise, which allowed for more ideas to flow between Ferrell, Jamie Demetriou, and Connor Swindells. This gave them the chance to really feel like a team, know each other, and play off of each other, to bicker amongst each other and give this silly framework to this big, important CEO and his lackeys. Ferrell found it fun to create this dynamic where they're all fumbling and bumbling.
